Archipelago Trail – The Most Beautiful Summer Adventure in the Turku Archipelago

There’s something almost magical about this route. When you set off along the Archipelago Trail, you’re not just travelling from one place to another – you’re stepping into the rhythm of the islands. Ferries carry you from one island to the next, the scenery shifts in an instant, and small villages tell big stories.

The route, around 250 kilometres in total, winds its way through the Turku archipelago via Parainen, Nauvo, Korppoo, Houtskari, Iniö and Kustavi. Along the way, you’ll find quiet jetties, the scent of cafés and unhurried moments on ferry decks – perhaps that’s why the journey stays with you long after summer has passed.

What Makes the Archipelago Trail Special?

The Archipelago Trail isn’t just a road through the islands – it’s a way to experience the sea, the islands and the villages up close. The route takes you over bridges, through forests and from one island to another by ferry. Each stop has its own rhythm: one moment you arrive at a lively harbour, the next at a quiet headland where time seems to stand still.

The ferries aren’t just a way to get around – they’re part of the experience. For children, they’re small adventures; for adults, a chance to pause, breathe and take in the sea.

How to Travel the Archipelago Trail

The Archipelago Trail can be explored by car, motorbike or bicycle. Travelling by car makes it easy to move from one island to the next, but we still recommend taking your time – stopping, soaking it all in and staying overnight. By bike, the route is more immersive, but it does require a bit of planning – and a few gentle breaks for your legs.

The route is open from mid-May to September. Ferry services run frequently during the summer, but it’s wise to allow extra time during peak periods. Most ferries cannot be booked in advance.

Tip: Travel the route anticlockwise – you’ll often avoid the worst of the queues.

Choose Your Route – The Full or the Short Trail?

The Archipelago Trail can be completed in two ways: the Full Trail and the Short Trail.

  • The Full Trail (approx. 250 km) takes you through the entire archipelago: Parainen, Nauvo, Korppoo, Houtskari, Iniö and Kustavi. This is the option for you if you want to see it all.

  • The Short Trail (approx. 120 km) runs from Parainen to Nauvo and back to the mainland. A quicker option for a day trip or a shorter getaway.

Both routes offer the beauty of the archipelago – just on a different scale.

Cycling the Archipelago Trail

For cyclists, the Archipelago Trail isn’t just a physical challenge – it’s an adventure where ferry crossings offer moments to rest, and the charm of island villages rewards every kilometre. The route requires a reasonable level of fitness, but offers views you simply wouldn’t experience otherwise.

It’s worth setting aside at least 3–4 days for a cycling trip. Ferry timetables set the pace, and it’s a good idea to plan your overnight stays in advance.

Archipelago Trail Ferry Connections

Ferry crossings are part of what makes the Archipelago Trail so special. There are eight ferries along the route – some free of charge, others with a fee. They shape the rhythm of the journey and offer natural pauses along the way.

It’s a good idea to check ferry timetables and any possible fees in advance.

Tip: Especially on the Iniö–Kustavi route, it’s worth checking schedules and allowing extra time for possible waiting during busy summer weekends.

Tips for the Perfect Archipelago Adventure

  • Plan your route, but leave room for surprises. Check ferry timetables and think about where you’d like to stay, but allow time for little detours along the way.

  • Book your accommodation in advance. The archipelago draws visitors in – especially in July – and the best places fill up quickly.

  • Pack for the weather. Conditions can change in an instant out here – a light rain jacket and comfortable shoes can make all the difference.

  • Stop often. Sometimes for a coffee, sometimes just to take in the horizon. The Archipelago Trail isn’t a race – it’s a journey.

  • Talk to the locals. The café owner, a fisherman at the harbour or a craftsperson in their shop – they’ll know exactly where it’s worth making a stop.
